Not everyone is as lucky as Mrs. Collins, a resident of Charleston, who got free eye surgery from a doctor. Ida Sui Collins was robbed of her cash in front of her home last month, money that she was going to use for her cataract surgery. She was really disappointed as those were her birthday checks and she didn’t know how she would arrange this money again, along with other medical bills.

Her voice touched one kind doctor at the Carolina Cataract and Laser Center. “Ms. Collins seemed just like the nicest lady and to see what happened to her was such an unfortunate thing and we just wanted to help in any way we could,” consoled Dr. Budev of the Carolina Cataract and Laser Center. He treated the 80-year old woman of cataract free of charge.

Dr. Budev was himself excited to help out the old lady. He took particular interest in her treatment and was glad to see her back in health. Briefing about her condition after the surgery, he said, “She’s doing great, she’s doing great! Everything went really, really well. We’re lucky that we had the opportunity to help her. We’re very pleased.”

Collins, who has other medical issues too, is a tough woman. During her last incident, she fought for her pocketbook and gave a tough time to the robber. “I wasn’t thinking about my life. I was thinking about my pocketbook and what worried me was having to replace all that stuff. He had to fight for it,” she said in an interview with Live 5 News last week. Soon after the incident, police arrested the two cousins Manuel Scott and Rodney Scott who were alleged to be involved in the case.

“There’s so many good things that’s happened out of this that I never dreamed would happen and it makes a big difference”, exclaimed Collins. Her story touched many people and she received a number of kind letters as well as checks in her mail.

Checks didn’t only come from family members but also from strangers. Most surprising of all was an anonymous check of $500 dropped at the Live 5 News Studio. It was from a former repenting robber who once stole money from a woman years ago. He regretted that he never got to apologize to her and found this a good opportunity to make amends.

Collins said that all this money will go to her medical bills. She was really happy to receive these tokens of affection and she said that it does make a big difference. She was particularly appreciative of the generosity of Dr. Budev. She said in an interview, “That’s right, that’s what I said there’s still good people in this world and he’s one of them.”

The “Redneck Fiddlin’ Man” has got some new eyes. Charlie Daniels, the country legend, can see without his glasses for the first time in 68 years. The Smart Eye Surgery seems to work out really fine.

“I’m just looking forward to not having to reach up and pat around the table for glasses when I get up in the morning to see where I’m going,” rejoiced Charlie on the success of the treatment. He got foggy eyes at the age of seven when he caught a severe fever. Since then, he has been struggling with his poor eyesight.

The eye surgery was on the 3rd of April and you can already see him singing Easter chants, a week later, at a church in Murfreesboro. The Smart Eye Surgery is the latest method of treating cataract, which expedites the recovery process. Charlie Daniels had the treatment of his left eye on Tuesday and of the right one, just two days later.

Dr. Ming Way, who operated on Charlie Daniels, said, “With the revolutionary ORA System, a cataract surgeon can now, for the first time, individualize and customize the treatment based on the state of the patient’s eye once the cataract has been removed.”

But how can a patient recover so quickly? Dr. Ming Way explains, “We can actually do mid-flight adjustment on the operating table, before surgery is finished, to test drive to see how well this particular patient’s body, in this case Mr. Charlie Daniels, is reacting to the lens implanted.”

The country legend is the first of the Tennesseans to have this type of treatment. Charlie Daniels has made several hit Country albums since 1950. His The Devil Went Down to Georgia reached Number 3 in the Billboard Hot 100 in 1979. Besides this song, he gave many hit singles as well as successful albums with his Charlie Daniel Band. He is indeed a major influence in combining the elements of Rock with Country music. For his contribution to music, he was added to the Grand Ole Opry in 2008.

Soon after his Smart Eye Surgery, a post on his Twitter account reads: “Even double cataract surgery couldn’t keep Charlie from performing at World Outreach Church’s Easter Celebration.” And that’s true. This is indeed due to the quick recovery process of the treatment as explained by Dr. Ming Way. Charlie Daniels is back on his gigs and he performed at Shooting Star Casino in Minnesota just one week after the surgery.

Today, Charlie Daniels can do one thing that he was yearning to do for the past 68 years: see without his glasses or lenses. “I’m going to get started out here and be able to see without glasses for the first time in 68 years,” he said. He looked really excited.

Pablo Sandoval, the third baseman to San Francisco Giants, looks through the new eyes that he recently got and he is quite appreciative about them. In November, he got laser surgery on his left eye, as he was feeling uncomfortable with wearing lenses. Now he can play his games more confidently.

Although, comfort was the main reason for the surgery, he got more benefits than he asked for. “I am seeing the ball better,” he rejoiced. “I see everything better. Everything is clearer.”

Previously, he was complaining about the contact lenses which he had to wear during the games. “They bothered my eyes. My eyes would get dry”, he said. After the eye surgery, he doesn’t need to wear those irritating contacts anymore.

With a more powerful left eye, he might be able to play more strategically against left-handed pitchers, when he bats right-handed. Before the surgery, he had a batting average of 0.295 as a right-handed when playing against lefties. The surgery has helped him score even better against them. Now he is a confident switch hitter.

His OPS was 0.215 lower against left-handed than against right-handed. Last season was quite favorable for him as he was one of the top scorers in the Giant’s batting order, while he was batting right-handed. Although, the team was skimpy at the plate, he batted 0.315 with 70RBIs and 23 homers. Then, the team scored only 570 runs, showing a huge difference of 127 runs from its score in 2010 when it almost won the World Series.

By this time, Sandoval has hit .231 in 39 at-bats, which is a comparatively slower start. But this doesn’t seem to annoy his manager much. “We’re looking for a similar year out of Sandoval to what he had last year,” said Bruce Bochy, his manager. Last year was a nice bounce-back season for him. We’re not looking for him to try to over-do it or anything like that.”

Sandoval’s performance from last season had some issues too. The main negative part was that it was not much. He only had 466 plate appearances, which were 134 plates lower from his performance in the previous two seasons.

Last year was a bad year for Sandoval. He injured his right-hand wrist in late April and had to miss six weeks. When he recovered from the wrist damage, another game caused strain in his left shoulder. Sandoval was able to recover from it without any surgery, although one was suggested.

“The shoulder feels fine,” he said. “Everything feels fine.” Pablo was high-spirited to participate in the next game. After the left eye surgery, he is now ready to make high scores. He has got his clearer eye on the plate appearances.

The long requested proposal of OptiMedica has finally been accepted. It’s Catalys Precision Laser System – a new generation method used in the treatment of cataract – is now CE mark approved. The process can now be used for creating single-plane as well as multi-plane arc incisions in the cornea. This will add new utility to the existing Catalys Precision Laser System, as stated by Optimedica.

The laser system itself was itself CE mark approved and allowed by the U.S Food and Drug Administration. With the approval for corneal incision, the system can be made more precise and easy to administer. Moreover, it will make the procedure safe as it brings an amazing level of accuracy.

“We are thrilled to be able to extend the system’s precision and accuracy benefits to these important surgical steps, as they will further optimize the experience for cataract surgeons and their patients”, said Mark J. Forchette, President and CEO of OptiMedica. The company is hopeful that the CE mark approval will highly improve the process. Dr. Forchette further added, “The CE mark approval for corneal incisions is an exciting development that will allow Catalys to bring even more value to the laser cataract procedure.”

The first surgeon to use Catalys for performing single-planer and multiple-planer incisions during cataract treatment was Professor Burkhard Dick. He was the chairman and head of the University Eye Clinic Bochum, Germany at that time. The CE mark approval will allow surgeons to implement the method, which they know is useful in the cataract treatment. It makes it possible to make highly precise accurate incisions in the cornea. Surgeons can now make incisions of accurate length, depth and orientation which will simplify the process.

Dr. Dick is proud to use this technology and refers to it as a “valuable addition” to his practice. “I believe that Catalys represents the forefront of innovation in laser cataract surgery, and it’s been my pleasure to break new ground by using the system for corneal incisions.” He is glad to see Optimedica receive the CE mark approval and says, “Catalys has proven to be a very valuable addition to my practice, and I look forward to continuing to work with OptiMedica to set the new standard in laser cataract surgery.”

There are just a few additional regulatory approvals to get and the technology ready to reach cataract surgeons and centers throughout the world. A software upgrade from Optimedica will be required to enable the devices to use it for corneal incisions.

Optimedicas is a California based global ophthalmic device company that develops performance-driven technologies for patient treatment and care. The Catalys Precision Laser System was designed by the company to streamline the cataract surgery and to make it more accurate.

The career of the struggling Terrance Knighton might get a bummer from his recent eye surgery. It came quite as a surprise, both to the public as well as the Jacksonville Jaguars for which he plays as a tackle. It’s not clear what caused the young player to get an eye surgery and speculation is swinging over the vines.
While the Jags are preparing for the fourth NFL season taking place this Fall, the participation of Terrance Knighton in the defense stays suspicious. It depends upon what comes out of the closet about the incident. The player is hopeful to join the game, as his mother quotes, “He’s in good spirits.” Speaking about the incident and the surgery, she says, “I have faith, and I didn’t lose my son. So that’s really all that matters.”

Briefing about their outlook over the case, the Jacksonville Jaguars said, “We are aware of the incident report regarding Terrance Knighton. We hold all of our players to a high standard of behavior, as does the National Football League. We’re concerned about this matter, and it is being handled internally. We’ll have no further comment at this time.”

According to the Florida Times Union, Knighton was involved in a violent argument while he was at a nightclub. His Twitter update, on the day the incident occurred, confirms his presence in the venue. The regional newspaper states that he got hit by a vodka bottle that caused the eye injury. The quarrel was not initiated by the victim himself.

The police reports, however, have a different angle of the story. According to the police, Terrance Knighton was “involved in a physical altercation” where he “repeatedly made threats to shoot people.” The report suggests that he might have been drinking and the quarrel may have ignited from him “disrespecting a female.” The Jaguars responded, “Our concern and our focus is on Terrance and his health and recovery.”

The injury is quite severe and even after the eye surgery it cannot be confirmed if he is in an appropriate state to participate in the forthcoming game. According to the Time-Union, the condition of his eye “appeared to be serious” as observed by the doctor when he went for a follow-up.
Terrance Knighton was selected from Temple, a small city south of Fort Worth in 2009. Since then he has participated in three seasons with a total of 45 games. Due to his skillful maneuvers, he soon found an important position in the middle of defense of the Jacksonville’s Jaguars. As of last season, he has made a total of 5.5 sacks and 75 tackles in his career. He and his mother are hopeful about his 2012 performance, which is potential of earning him a long-term contract.
